From student to teacher, amateur to professional, almost every clarinet player has at some time played on a Buffet clarinet. One of the most popular models is the Buffet E11. The first model offered by the maker made from Grenadilla wood, this clarinet was commonly referred in the USA as Buffet’s “Intermediate” model. Sep 15, 2017 Check your clarinet's serial number, located on the case or on a small stamp on the back of the barrel. If the number is above 50,000, it is likely an R13. You can also look at the 'A' and 'A' flat keys near the top of the clarinet. If the two keys are fused onto a single joint, your clarinet is not an R13.

Evette Clarinet Serial Numbers
For anyone searching serial number lists.
First, you have to identify the model of clarinet. Is it an “Evette”, or an “Evette-Schaeffer”, or a true “Buffet”. Around 1978 the Evette and E&S models were dropped for the name change to B12, E11, etc. Then you have to identify the location of manufacturing.

Who made the earlier Evette and E&S clarinets ?
Many of the earlier Evette and E&S clarinets were made by Malerne. They are recognizeable by the keywork, compare them to the Marlene page
here.
So with Evette and Evette & Schaeffer that basically means the A, B, D
and E series are Malerne made, which ironically coincides with Malernes serial number conventions. Unless they are stamped “Made in Germany” and those were Schreiber made.
Buffet made K41xx is based on a pre-R13 Buffet. Looks like one via
the keywork and matches the R13 keywork introduction. Remember, Buffet did not introduce the separate throat keys posts until 1955ish. This is the same with the E&S / Evette model line if it was made by Buffet.
This is obviously a Buffet professional model just with the
added Modele Evette & Schaeffer stamp added on (pictures from eBay, April 2013)
Malerne made Evette & Scheffer B30xx – notice the small barrel trill key guide (Malerne
like) and this is an early non-adjusting screw model with shared post (Malerne & Buffet like). Also notice the top key of the lower joint ring keys, the top pad cup arm bends upwards – aka Malerne’s !!

Evette Clarinet Serial Number Chart For Caille Outboard Motors
Some time ago I received a question about Evette & Schaeffer Clarinets. I happen to own one myself, with a similar serial number, and I also had trouble at first finding out much about it – there seemed to be a lot of conflicting information about Evette & Schaeffers and a lot of confusion about whether they were the same as Evette clarinets. Here’s the question I was asked, and some of the information I found from both official and unofficial sources. Question: I am looking for the history of my clarinet and cannot find the background on Bb Evette & Schaeffer clarinet Buffet Crampon Paris France serial number K31xxx. Can you help? Answer: Coincidentally I also have an Evette and Schaeffer with the serial number K29xxx. I couldn’t find much information on these clarinets either, so I emailed Buffet Crampon a few years ago and was told mine is an intermediate clarinet made in 1973. I don’t know how many they made each year, but yours is probably no more than a couple of years newer. I think they are roughly equivalent in quality to the Buffet E13’s – a high-end intermediate. The Evette & Schaeffer clarinets are nice instruments. In my research I stumbled across rumors that they were actually professional R13’s that had been labelled differently because of minor flaws in wood grain or finish. I don’t believe that’s true (nor do any of the more knowledgeable people I’ve asked), but I have seen great reviews of these clarinets. A professional clarinetist I know tried mine out for me before I bought it. He said it was excellent, and he wouldn’t hesitate to play a gig using it. Many people think they are student instruments because Buffet made an Evette student model (no Schaeffer on the end). The Evette and Schaeffer is a different, and better, instrument.
